Strangehaven # 1 & 2
Abiogenesis Press

Review by Benn Ray

Strangehaven, as it's name suggests, isn't your average town. But then again, maybe it is, if you live in any of the towns from Twin Peaks, Northern Exposure, Picket Fences or American Gothic. Writer/artist Gary Spencer Millidge has managed to create one of those quirky small towns with an array of eccentric residents that you can't help but like, or at least be intrigued by. Alex Hunter is travelling along the English countryside on a much needed holiday from his life (he and his wife are splitsville) when he gets lost and has a mysterious accident. When he awakens, Alex is under the care of Janey, a lovely young lass. The cast of wacky but endearing townfolk includes Mrs McCreadie (who carries a shoebox with unknown contents), a secret society (who don't seem to want Alex to stick around), the down-trodden Dempsey, Meg (the half Amazonian shaman), and crazy Brian, to name but a few. Alex, despite Janey's objections (and the fact that this town seems perfect for him), says he must leave. But car problems and faulty directions (or something more mysterious) lead him right back to Strangehaven, and Janey. Give Strangehaven a try, you'll probably want to get a room at the local Bed and Breakfast and stay a fortnight.
