As usual for the Bristol Comic Festival, Gary has contributed to the now traditional Deck of Cards – this time a top trumps style deck – with the card sets and original art to be auctioned off in aid of the charity ChildLine. From a list of comics characters that he’d never drawn before, Millidge picked out Terry Moore’s Strangers In Paradise character Katchoo. It’s painted in gouache on A3 (297 x 420 mm) watercolour board. Terry Moore apparently liked it so much that he has reproduced the art on the inside back cover of the current Strangers In Paradise #65.
If you can’t get to the Bristol Comic Festival to bid on the art live, you can bid online prior to the live auction by 28th May by e-mailing your bid. You can preview all the pieces of art due for auction at the very nifty official site.
In addition, Millidge has also contributed to this year’s Just 1 Page book, also to be launched at the Bristol show. The theme for this year’s Just 1 Page is British comic characters, of which Gary landed his childhood favourite from the pages of Pow! and Wham!, Mike Higgs’ creation The Cloak. Homer Simpson also puts in a cameo appearance. As last year, the Just 1 Page book has been produced by Adrian Brown and this year will raise money for the Trinity Hospice Charity. It’s expected to run to 72 pages with 8 in full colour and will retail at £5.00 / $10.00 per copy, and will be available online from the Just 1 Page website.
Millidge’s original art for the Cloak strip will be available via an online eBay auction.
