A new “how to” type book has just been published, Writing and Illustrating the Graphic Novel by Mike Chinn includes lots of examples from culled from the pages of Strangehaven and features specifically commissioned cover art by Gary Spencer Millidge. As you can see above, the new cover artwork retreads a familiar theme, adapted from the publisher’s brief.
In addition to the cover pastiche, Millidge’s artwork has been used to illustrate various techniques throughout the book, including two examples on page 31, plus items on pages 66, 81 and 106, backgrounds (front and back covers and pages 2 & 3) as well as uncredited uses on pages 114 and 119. Gary would, however, like to point out that he had no input on the design of the cover, the design of the book, the content or the particular examples of his work presented therein.
Writing and Illustrating the Graphic Novel (subtitled Everything You Need To Know to Create Great Graphic Works) is a large format 128 full-colour glossy pages, which also cut-and-pastes art by David Hine, Eddie Campbell, Angus McKie and Steve Parkhouse among others. Packaged by London company Quarto Books, it’s published in the US by Barron’s Educational (ISBN 0764127888/$21.95) and in the UK by A & C Black (ISBN 0713669985/£14.99).
