This article originally appeared in Strangehaven issue issue #16, June 2004.
It may have passed many of you by, but the Spring 2003 issue of the revamped, reinvented, reincarnated International Studio featured a four-page portfolio featuring the artwork of none other than myself. Recently revived by Starchild creator James A. Owen, International Studio has a proud hundred year-old history, although there have been some delays in getting the 21st century relaunch up to speed.
In fact, James first mentioned this project to me way back at the San Diego con in 1997. I thought it would be pretty cool to be featured in such a high quality arts magazine like International Studio, and James arranged for me to send him a bunch of samples of my best painted work.
It wasn’t until early 2003, while desperately trying to finish Strangehaven #15 and the Alan Moore book, that James contacted me again regarding the feature – only they had lost the high resolution files and could I send them some new ones, like, today? Which I did, and lo and behold, the fabulous-looking International Studio Spring 2003 issue eventually arrived at my P O Box in late Summer.
And an impressive looking product it is, a large, oversized format, beautifully printed in colour on high quality art paper and featuring some stunning visual delights from fantasy artist James Christensen, Disney’s Sleeping Beauty conceptual designer Eyvind Earle, Starman artist Tony Harris, landscape artist Odgen M. Pleissner and designer and painter John Picacio.
The piece on that obscure comics artist from the UK featured several Strangehaven covers sans text, plus a couple of previously unseen illustrations. Very humbling to be part of such a fine publication.
James has big plans for his Coppervale International imprint, with the resurrection of another classic long-running periodical, the science fiction pulp magazine Argosy, and a new comic anthology Words And Pictures all in the pipeline.
